My Ideal Candidate
Now that the next election season is upon us, I thought it would be good to list most of what I (and a few others, I’m sure) am looking for in a Presidential candidate.
The list is a bit long, and you might think a bit unrealistic, but it does encompass nearly everything a candidate should have in order for me to even consider voting for them.
Not beholden to any particular group, such as the Tea Party, the Koch Brothers, any superpacs. They should not get any funding from sources that include large corporations such as Monsanto, GE, and others.
They should be pro education, in all aspects. They should support reducing the student loans for young people going to college.
They should be in favor of keeping Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Food Stamps and other social net programs intact, if not expanded.
They should support not eliminating the rich people’s tax loop holes, (the estate tax) and they should be in favor of closing the large gaps in the tax code that allow corporations to move their money off-shore to avoid paying taxes. This would mean true tax equality.
They should not be affiliated with any right-wing Christian group, nor should they take any funding from them.
I really don’t care if the candidate is female or male.
The ideal candidate should have known true poverty at one time or another in their lifetime. They should not have a net worth of over 1 million dollars.
The best candidate would not allow Wall Street to fund their campaign.
They must be pro-abortion, pro-women’s rights, pro-equality and non-racist. They should be in favor of raising the minimum wage nationally to at least $10.00 an hour.
The best candidate would be in favor of rebuilding our infrastructure, dismantling the military-industrial complex and withdrawing our financial support for other countries that invade or terrorize others.
They would be in favor of closing Guantanamo Bay forever, dismantling the Military Commission that is in place to prosecute those remaining there. They would be in favor of transferring all prisoners to Federal prisons and reestablishing rule of law regarding them.
They would withdraw all our remaining troops from the Middle East and only send in tactical support for those who are fighting the Taliban or ISIS.
Another issue that the ideal candidate would be wise to tackle is our intelligence community, and dismantle all of it, or scale it and their power back dramatically. The NSA is a prime target on this list.
They would be willing to take apart the Homeland Security Agency, especially the TSA.
Quite a list, isn’t it? But to me, I think it’s about time we had a President who has all of those qualifications and be willing to work on those issues.
The sad part is, it will never happen, because our electoral process is forever tainted and corrupted beyond repair due to the Citizens United decision.
Until then we’ll just keep on hoping that someone will actually care about the American people and not their financial backers or special interests.
Because right now, it’s just not happening with any of the candidates who have declared their intentions to run.
