The Savages Among Us
In writing this piece, I was rather confounded by how to write it without being perceived (and therefore totally prejudiced) as being one, if not all of the following:
However, I can’t avoid being some or all of them, because I am defined by those. I can’t help my upbringing or my sex, nor will I apologize for them.
The reason why I’m explaining myself is that what I’m about to relate will turn your stomach and break your heart.
Trying to write about it as a disinterested bystander is very, very hard under these circumstances without being assumed to be prejudiced-but I won’t make any apologies for writing this article to anyone.
The NY Times recently ran an article about an alleged rape and potential honor killing in Afghanistan.
Nothing new, huh? Honor killings and rapes occur all over the Middle East and indeed, in other countries all over the world.
The details in the article, though, are absolutely revolting.
The rape took place in a mosque. The rapist was a mullah. The victim was a 10-year-old girl.
Afterward, the mullah claimed it was consensual sex, and that he thought the girl was older. He was arrested, but he offered to marry his victim as compensation.
After the rape, the girl was sent to the hospital, where her injuries were described as this:
“The girl’s own testimony, and medical evidence, supported a rape so violent that it caused a fistula, or a break in the wall between the vagina and rectum, according to the police and the official bill of indictment. She bled so profusely after the attack that she was at one point in danger of losing her life because of a delay in getting medical care.”
To make matters even more terrible: the girl’s own family wanted to kill her for the sake of their honor. They support the Mullah.
In desperation, a pediatrician took her to a shelter where she would possibly survive long enough to be sent out of the country.
Unfortunately, the police returned the girl to her family.
Nobody knows what has happened since. Efforts to contact the family have been futile. The police say that they would not have handed her back if they believed that she was in danger of being killed.
Nobody knows if she is still alive.
This is pure barbarism. It is a stone-age mentality that drives all ‘honor-killings’, which have been estimated as being perpetuated 91% of the time by Muslims.
Isn’t it time we grew out of our savage past and became human beings?
Isn’t it time for the entire world community to start rejecting this behavior and mindset that all women are property of their families, and thus to be disposed of as decreed by ancient and useless customs?
Until this happens, we will continue to see honor killings and treatment of women as property to be acceptable.
It is not, and it must end.
We are no longer in the Stone Age.
