Whore or Madonna?

For women, this question has plagued us for millenia. We’ve always had this problem-because men and society in general have insisted on putting us into categories that define our existence, and keeping us trapped in them.

We become suspect if we try to move out of them, and reviled if we do better than just the familiar roles that society has bestowed on us.

It’s not just about sex, either. It’s about where we want to go in life, and how we live our lives.

If women want to have a career or jobs that do not fit into the preconceived roles that have been laid down as ‘proper or fitting’ by others, we’re called ‘pushy feminists’ or ‘feminazis’.

If we don’t want to have children, we’re called selfish.

If we don’t want to get married, we’re called ‘manhaters’ or even worse.

If we happen to have a sex life and are not afraid to have one, we’re called whores.

If we decide not to have sex with a particular man, we can be killed for it-our bodies are not our own property, don’t you know?

When we decide that we don’t want to have a child but are pregnant, our actions in getting an abortion are called ‘monstrous’, ‘child abuse’ and ‘murder’.

If we dress a certain way, we’re told it’s “asking for rape”.

If we demand equal pay for equal work, we’re told we don’t deserve it because we ‘don’t work as hard as men”.

If we travel, we carry a boatload of warnings about it.

Because we’re not allowed in some places to travel alone lest we be raped or murdered. The quote here is relevant:

The same things happen everywhere in the world and it does not affect tourism,” Mr. Haykiri said. But he went on to say: “If the woman does not flirt, a man would not attempt to do anything, any harassment. Everything starts with a woman.

So we just can’t win-we’re condemned to second class status because we’re female and regarded as the ‘weaker sex’ who can’t do anything without a man.

Then everyone wonders why we’re pissed off. I’d say we have more than enough reasons to be.

That’s why this hashtag is trending hot right now on Twitter, with no signs of abating.

We’re tired of the same old shit. It’s about time we speak up, isn’t it?
