We, the poor

by fmhilton

Are legion.

We serve the food.
check out the groceries.
tend the bars.
make the beds, clean the toilets, tidy up the rooms.
sell the fast food, the drugs, the gas and oil.
Dig the ditches, harvest the crops.

We, the poor, are told that
we don’t deserve the right to vote,
decent housing, health insurance,
health care, better working conditions
higher wages, education, or basic legal rights.
We don’t count.

We, the poor
Are laughed at
harassed
attacked
ignored
denigrated
ridiculed
killed
slandered
shamed
mocked
for being poor.

We fight the wars created by rich people.
We die in silence,
Without hope.

We are told to stay silent.
We are told that we should accept
poverty and shame
as a way of life.

We are told that we
don’t deserve to live because
we are not rich.

We, the poor
are told
That because we are poor
We don’t deserve any better,
Should not expect any more
than what we get.

Politicians tell us
we’re moral failures as people,
Because we’re not rich,
that we’re not worthy.

We’re the 47%, and the 99%.

We are the poor.
Do you know us?
